Wilder Plays the Race Card

Wilder: Leave charter as it is - News - inRich.com

While I am not surprised, I certainly did not expect Mayor Wilder to stoop so soon to playnig the race card. Whatever small respect I had for him is quickly disappearing. Just yesterday I hinted at this possibility, but little did I expect I would be so prescient. In one fell swoop he has indicated what we can expect for the next year, maybe five years.

Here are highligts lifted from today's Times-Dispatch.

" Wilder accused the City Council of "turning back the clock" on black political representation "

"The clock's been turned back,"

"I don't intend to do anything with the charter -- leave it as it is," he said, and, referring to next year's mayoral election, added, "I've dealt with it for three years, I can deal with it for one more year or five more years."

Wilder saved his strongest words for the council, noting that a black majority had been replaced by a white majority. But he added, "There's nothing wrong with it."

Reminds of the Seinfeld line "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

Wilder said later that he was referring primarily to Council President William J. Pantele

"I've extended all the olive branches I intend to extend,"

To borrow a phrase

"Racism is the last refuge of scoundrels"
